Fantastic to be invited to be involved in the Horti-couture Exhibition at this year’s Ekka.
The ‘by invitation’ event, titled ‘Horti-Couture, Wearing Your Garden’ offers an alternative artistic approach to promoting Queensland Growers. Botanically-inspired garments are modelled live and judged in a number of categories ranging from raw plant materials, through plant-based materials to commercial materials with botanical themes.
I have five outfits in the parade – three created from paper and two from artificial flowers and foliage. Overall, there are over 30 amazing on parade.
The magnificent ‘Let’s Have Us a Garden Wedding’ won the Most Outstanding retain’ Award. This outfit comprises 3000+ deconstructed and reassembled artificial flowers. As well as the pinks reflecting the iconic Ekka strawberry sundaes, the pinks and teals reflect the colours attributed to female cancers. Money from the sale of this dress will go to the Beautiful You Cancer Charity to help establish a retreat on the Sunshine Coast for women undergoing cancer treatment. This is a cause close to my heart as I live with inoperable ovarian cancer.
The origami-inspired ‘I am where I am’ won ‘Best Outfit’ in its category.
Parades will be held again at 11am on Ekka People’s Day and midday Saturday 16 Aug.
